South Park Redefines a Homosexual Slur and Upsets Gay Rights Activists

Posted by Chris DeMarco on Friday, November 6th, 2009 at 8:50 pm

I just happened to come across this, and as I don’t really watch South Park, it was the first I had heard of it. In a recent episode, the South Park authors have attempted to redefine the word “Fag,” which has traditionally been a slur against homosexuals, to what the word is more commonly used to refer to – “an inconsiderate douchebag [like a harley rider],” according to the animation.

“You can be gay and not be a fag…a lot of fags aren’t gay.”

After watching a few clips from the episode, I can clearly see what the authors are trying to say – and even though I personally refrain from using the word, I agree with the concept of what South Park is trying to do. However, gay rights group “GLAAD” does not feel the same way.

The group calls the effort “well-intentioned” but claims that “the word is and remains a hateful slur that is often part of the harassment, bullying and violence that gay people, and gay youth in particular, experience on a daily basis in this country.” While the group agrees that the most common use of the word has indeed transitioned to more of an “all-purpose insult” rather than referring specifically to homosexuals, it maintains that use of the word is still “irresponsible and wrong” as the word is rooted in anti-homosexual origin.

Haha…anyone who thinks South Park was doing this with good intentions is way off. I watch the show, they constantly push the envelope and then end the show with some good message just so they dont get cancelled or worse. No issue, social group or person is out of bounds for them and that’s what makes the show great.

And when Canada started allowing the f bomb on TV shows, South Park didn’t miss a beat and made for some pretty hilarious epidodes, and even made the reruns better.

South Park is not trying to make the world a better place. Just selling comercials.

Okay the origin of fag isn’t as a homosexual slur a faggot was a bundle of fire wood. These were difficult to carry and eventually became a term for the elderly. Then the poor who had to harvest the firewood were also called fags. I am firm believer that the word only has a power if you let it. Since the meaning of fag has changed so often why even worry about the label. If you ignore people’s slander and avoid making a scene no one will care if you are gay or straight or whatever floats your boat.

You mean like how the word gay has been transitioned?

Great article. There’s a lot of good info here, though I did want to let you know something – I am running Ubuntu with the up-to-date beta of Firefox, and the look and feel of your blog is kind of quirky for me. I can read the articles, but the navigation doesn’t work so well.
